Course Overview

In Acellus AP English Language and Composition course, students will master the three core skills tested on the AP exam—rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and synthesis—while developing the ability to read complex texts critically and communicate ideas with precision and purpose. Beginning with foundational concepts such as the rhetorical situation and basic essay structure, the course progresses through increasingly sophisticated strategies for analyzing how authors craft messages for specific audiences, constructing defensible arguments, and integrating multiple sources into original writing. Students will examine authorial choices in diction, syntax, tone, evidence, and organization, learning to evaluate their effectiveness in achieving a writer’s purpose. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to write fluent, evidence-based essays that demonstrate nuanced understanding of how rhetoric shapes meaning. Through repeated practice in identifying exigence, audience needs, line of reasoning, methods of development, and stylistic devices, learners will refine their own writing processes, including thesis development, paragraph coherence, transitions, counterargument handling, and reflective conclusions.  Scope and Sequence

Unit 1 – Rhetorical Analysis I Students begin by exploring the rhetorical situation, learning to identify exigence, audience, writer’s perspective, context, overall message, stance, and individual claims within a text. They examine how claims connect and develop, distinguish strong evidence from supplemental details, and practice crafting clear topic sentences supported by relevant evidence and insightful commentary. The unit culminates in instruction on effective transitions, equipping students with the foundational skills to analyze and replicate structured rhetorical writing.

Unit 2 – Argument I This unit shifts focus to argumentation, teaching students to analyze audiences (one-to-one versus large or mixed) and address their beliefs, values, and needs. Learners study how authors develop theses—both explicit and implicit—organize ideas through sections and structure, and select significant evidence supported by developed commentary. Emphasis is placed on understanding the reader’s context, making historical comparisons, and meeting reader needs, while students practice writing concise, defensible thesis statements for rhetorical analysis, argument, and synthesis prompts.

Unit 3 – Synthesis I Students are introduced to synthesis writing, learning to recognize how authors establish source credibility, integrate evidence effectively, and connect claims to supporting details. The unit explores unconventional organization strategies, line of reasoning, logical paragraph connections, and methods of development (narration, exemplification, cause and effect). Students analyze how these methods shape reader understanding and practice reinforcing claims, using precise requotes, developing coherent paragraphs, and employing strategic transitions, including those leading into conclusions.

Unit 4 – Rhetorical Analysis II Building on Unit 1, this unit deepens rhetorical analysis by examining how text details and writing choices reveal audience and exigence. Students analyze tone shifts, rhetorical moves, compare-and-contrast techniques, definition versus description, and the use of multiple methods of development. They also study effective introductions (hook, transition, thesis) and conclusions (restatement, impactful idea, reflective takeaway), while learning to avoid common thesis pitfalls such as restating the prompt or summarizing the issue.

Unit 5 – Argument II Students advance their argumentative writing by mastering body paragraph components—claim, evidence, and commentary—and recognizing how varied structures create unity and coherence. The unit covers tone (connotative versus denotative language), purposeful diction, syntactical choices, and line-of-reasoning development. Learners practice using commentary to connect ideas, chronological and relational transitions, sentence variety, and diction that conveys tone, while editing for redundancy, wordiness, and clarity.

Unit 6 – Synthesis II This unit refines synthesis skills through evaluation of source reliability, bias, citation pages, and shifts in writer position. Students annotate texts to track argument development, analyze adjectives and verbs for tone and message, and use qualifying diction. They practice selecting and synthesizing evidence from multiple sources, crafting and revising defensible thesis statements, and making diction choices that align with topic and tone while increasing descriptive detail through verbs and adjectives.

Unit 7 – Rhetorical Analysis III Students engage with advanced rhetorical analysis, studying how introductions provide context, conclusions clarify key ideas, and qualifiers reveal complexity. The unit examines sentence structures (independent, dependent, and non-essential clauses), declarative sentences, logical ordering, and fluency. Learners also focus on writing revisions for clarity, avoiding absolutes and contradictions, integrating quotations effectively, addressing counterarguments, and using punctuation to show relationships between ideas.

Unit 8 – Argument III This unit emphasizes audience awareness, rhetorical appeals, tone establishment through diction and comparisons, and the strategic use of modifiers to anticipate audience needs and reveal values. Students explore writer’s style through rhythm, parallelism, and varied syntax. They practice clarifying ideas with modifiers and parenthetical elements, revising for ambiguity, and demonstrating audience understanding through precise diction and stylistic choices.

Unit 9 – Synthesis III The final unit integrates advanced synthesis and style, covering sound techniques, rhythm through punctuation, anaphora, and transitional elements that strengthen line of reasoning. Students learn to enhance credibility through modifiers, counterarguments, alternative perspectives, and concessions. Emphasis is placed on rebuttals, purposeful placement of counterarguments, varied punctuation for parallelism and style, and commentary that acknowledges evolving information, culminating in sophisticated argumentative writing that balances multiple viewpoints.
