Course Overview

This course is designed to build an academic foundation for students with special needs. Students who are Autistic, those with Down Syndrome, and other academically challenged students have excelled in this course. To increase communicative abilities, aural, visual, and kinesthetic (signing) techniques are utilized. A special emphasis is placed on building understanding and self-esteem, as the student develops academic, social, and life skills. Course topics include:

Scope and Sequence

Unit 1 - Self Worth In this unit, students learn that they are important and special. They study about capital and lowercase letters, about signing the ABC's, and about spelling their names. They study about daily tasks such as interacting with helpers at school, going to school, dressing themselves, and waking up in the morning. Unit 2 - Friends In this unit, students study what friends are, making friends, and what they are like. They study about sharing. They study the ABC song. They study the letter A and the number 1. They study about playing together and about caring about and sharing with friends. They also study up and down. Unit 3 - School In this unit, study about getting ready for the day and review an ABC book. They study about energy. They review the letter A, and talk about backpacks and things that go in them. They study the letter M, and the number 2. They talk about the concept of how many, study rhyming, and discuss polygons and other shapes. Unit 4 - Families In this unit students learn about families. They study the life skills of unloading the dishwasher and setting the table , and they study how they can help their family. They study about the rooms in the house, and about chores. They study the letter T. They study about animal mothers and babies, about animal families, and about wild animals. They study the number 3, and they learn to say their ABC's. Unit 5 - Neighbors In this unit, students learn about neighbors. They study what a neighbor and a neighborhood is. They review what they have learned about friends. They study the letter P and the number 4, and they study about big and little letters. Unit 6 - My Community In this unit students study about the careers of people around them. They learn that they can choose the career they want. They study the letters P and O. They study maps and begin to learn to read them. They study about good attitude, and they study about sets that can be found in their neighborhood. Unit 7 - The Senses In this unit students learn about the five senses, and they study about each one: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. They study how the senses are used. They study the letter N and the numbers 3, 4, and 5, and the concept of next. Unit 8 - Enjoying Nature In this unit students learn about what nature is, and what they can do in it. They study about habitats and rocks. They study about keeping a nature scrapbook, observing things outside, and going for a nature walk. They learn that nature is all around us and about sounds that occur in nature. They study the letter N, and the number 6. They discuss outdoor activities, such as fishing, camping, and bear hunting. They study signs for camping. Unit 9 - Colors and Weather In this unit, students study what weather feels like, and what it is. They also study about colors. They study the letter C. They study about where colors occur in our world and learn sight words. They study about the number 7. Unit 10 - The Seasons In this unit students learn about the seasons. They discuss what each season is like and how to be ready for the seasons, and study about watching the weather. They also study the letters C and D, and the number 8. Unit 11 - The World's Countries In this unit students learn about different countries. They study about America, Germany, China, Brazil, and Italy. They study about the letter U and the number 9. Unit 12 - So Many Animals In this unit students study about handling challenges, and study the signs and names for different animals. They also study about the letter S and the number 10. Unit 13 - Life on the Farm In this unit students study about farm animals and wild animals, and what animals eat. They also study about the letter G. Unit 14 - Wild Animals In this unit students learn about wild animals, including insects and animals found in the ocean and the jungle. They study sets of animals, and study the concept of big and little. They also study about the letter H. Unit 15 - Building is Fun In this lesson students learn about how to build things, working together to build things, and the power of believing that you can do things. They review ABC signs and study about food art. They also study about the letter F. Unit 16 - Doing Chores In this unit students learn about chores. They learn that families work and play together, and that they can do things to help. They learn that being little is a good thing , and study about big jobs and little jobs. They study about the letter F, and about units of time. Unit 17 - Projects and Tools In this unit students study about projects and tools. They learn to plan a project and to measure. They study what tools are, and that they are able to use them. They learn what work machines are, and study matching the size of the machine to the size of the job. They also study about the letter B. Unit 18 - Life in the City In this unit students learn about cities. They study how to be safe on the street and what a city is. They study about how numbers are used for shopping, what vehicles that are found in cities, what signs are found in a city, and what kinds of helpers are in communities. They study about coins and are introduced to the concept of money. They also study about the letter L. Unit 19 - Life in the Country In this unit students learn about the Country. They study food on the farm, what the country is, and signs to use about the country. They also study about the letter E, and about picnics. Unit 20 - Eating Healthy Foods In this unit students study about healthy foods. They learn how to be safe in the kitchen, how to choose healthy foods, what foods are found in the kitchen, how to make a pizza, and how to bake a cake. They study about the letter R, and they study about food that builds healthy bodies. They also learn to sort. Unit 21 - My Body and its Parts In this unit students the concept of more and less. They also study different parts of the body, and they study about the letter W. Unit 22 - Fitness and Exercise In this unit students begin to exercise. They study about the benefits of exercise, about feet, and about the Letter K. Unit 23 - Games and Sports In this unit students study about games and sports. They study how to be safe around water, the names of sports, what a score is, and how to be a good sport. They also study about the letter X and begin to study about the letter K. Unit 24 - Growing Up In this unit students study about how they are growing. They study about their need the sun, about about having a healthy routine, and about the concept of short and tall. They also study about opposites, and about the letter V. Unit 25 - Plants Grow, Too In this unit students study about plants. They study about taking care of plants and what roots, stems, and leaves are. They study about the process of plant growth from seed to plant, garden plants, how to make a garden, and growing peach and apple trees. They also study about the letter Y. Unit 26 - Garden Changes In this unit students study about how plants grow in a garden, and about harvest time. They study signs for things that are outside. They study about patterns, and using patterns to predict what's next. They also study about the letter Z. Unit 27 - Round Up the Cowboys In this unit students learn about rhyming, days of the week, and cowboys. They study about signs for the days of the week, counting, and about the letter J. Unit 28 - Planets and Space In this unit students study space. They study study signs for things in space, and they study our Earth as a planet. They study about outer space, about our solar system and the planets it contains, and about the sun and the moon. They study about space travel, and the order of the planets in our solar system. The also learn the letter Q. Unit 29 - Music and ABCs In this unit students study about music. They learn about musical instruments. They march to music, review the ABC's, and study about having a positive attitude.
