Unit 1: College and Career Readiness In this foundational unit, students will acquire practical skills for college and career success, including resume and cover letter writing, interview techniques, public speaking, and professional email composition. They will explore time management, note-taking strategies, digital literacy, financial budgeting, scholarship essay writing, stress management, and self-advocacy in educational settings. Additional focus areas include critical thinking to identify logical fallacies, ethical research practices, standardized test preparation, portfolio development, and setting academic and career goals through reflective writing.
Unit 2: Foundations of Literary Analysis Students will build core skills for interpreting complex texts by examining elements of fiction such as plot structure, characterization, setting, point of view, symbolism, tone, and theme. The unit introduces poetic forms, imagery, figurative language, sound devices, and dramatic conventions including stage directions, tragedy, and comedy. Through close reading strategies, historical contextual analysis, author’s purpose, intertextuality, satire, archetypes, and comparisons between fiction and nonfiction, learners will develop the ability to analyze literature across genres with depth and insight.
Unit 3: Literature in Context - Part I This unit immerses students in early American and British texts that celebrate civic virtue, heroism, and national unity. Students will analyze John Adams’s Inaugural Address for rhetorical strategies promoting civic harmony, Beowulf for themes of heroism, loyalty, and epic style, and selections from Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales for chivalry, patience, faith, and humorous narrative techniques. They will also study James Madison’s Federalist No. 10 for arguments on faction and unity, while comparing themes of duty and heroism across works and examining historical influences on literary style and meaning.
Unit 4: Literature in Context - Part II Students will engage with 19th- and early 20th-century literature that explores personal growth, resilience, and American identity. They will read and analyze Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for themes of friendship, moral growth, and dialect; Frederick Douglass’s Narrative for education, resilience, and rhetorical power; Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “The American Scholar” for intellectual independence; Theodore Roosevelt’s “The New Nationalism” for effort and unity; Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables for redemption and compassion; and Jack London’s The Call of the Wild for survival, loyalty, and the power of nature. Comparative analysis of perseverance and historical context will deepen understanding of these uplifting narratives.
Unit 5: Advanced Writing Skills In this unit, students will master the full writing process from prewriting and thesis development to drafting, revising, and editing. They will practice multiple genres including narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, argumentative, literary analysis, comparative, and creative writing (short stories and poetry). Emphasis is placed on rhetorical appeals, counterarguments, sentence variety, transitions, audience awareness, grammar (parallel structure, clauses, punctuation), style and voice, peer review, and timed writing, culminating in polished, college-ready compositions.
Unit 6: Research and Inquiry Students will learn college-level research methods, beginning with formulating focused questions and evaluating credible primary and secondary sources. They will navigate digital libraries, organize notes, synthesize information, avoid plagiarism through proper MLA citation, and create annotated bibliographies. The unit guides learners through writing a full research paper—including introduction, literature review, argument development, visual aids, and conclusion—while building skills in peer review, revision, oral presentation of findings, and debate construction.
Unit 7: Capstone Project As the culminating experience, students will integrate skills from the entire course by proposing, researching, drafting, and revising a comprehensive project that connects themes across units (such as duty, perseverance, or redemption). They will gather and evaluate evidence, incorporate feedback through peer review, and polish a final written product and presentation. This project demonstrates mastery of literary analysis, advanced writing, research, and professional communication while allowing students to explore a personally meaningful topic with depth and originality.
