Course Overview
Acellus Grade 8 Language Arts develops confident readers, writers, and communicators through a series of engaging themed units, each built around high-interest topics such as adventure, mystery, medieval life, nature, lost cities, patriotism, careers, and science and technology. Students read widely across classic and contemporary literature, including works such as Treasure Island, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Ivanhoe, Walden, Ozymandias, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, alongside speeches, arguments, and informational texts. Through close reading, they analyze theme, plot structure, character motivation, figurative language, rhetorical devices, and author's craft, always citing textual evidence to support their interpretations.
Writing instruction progresses through the major modes: students compose narratives with vivid settings and developed characters, craft argumentative essays with claims, evidence, and counterarguments, write clear informative texts, and conduct research projects that synthesize multiple sources. Grammar and conventions are woven throughout, from verbals and verb moods to comma rules, pronoun agreement, and editing for clarity and style. Students also build speaking and listening skills by preparing presentations, participating in discussions, and analyzing speeches. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze literary and informational texts with evidence-based reasoning, compose effective narrative, argumentative, and informative writing, and apply the conventions of standard English with precision.

Scope and Sequence
Unit 1 – Narrative Text Analysis: Adventure and Explorers Students hone text analysis skills through narratives of adventure and exploration, including Treasure Island, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, The Great Nebraska Sea, and Arms and the Man. They analyze themes, plot structure, character development, setting, foreshadowing, and dramatic elements such as dialogue and satire, citing textual evidence throughout, and practice editing for verb tense errors.
Unit 2 – Character and Plot Analysis: Mystery Students analyze character motivations and plot development in mystery texts such as The Adventure of the Speckled Band, A Retrieved Reformation, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and The Blue Train. They examine suspense techniques, irony, cultural context, and narrative endings, evaluate evidence, write about plot twists, and edit for pronoun-antecedent agreement and commonly confused words.
Unit 3 – Writing a Narrative: Medieval This unit teaches narrative writing through medieval-themed excerpts from Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, and Ben-Hur. Students craft settings, develop characters and dialogue, structure their stories, and explore archetypes and historical context, culminating in an original medieval narrative. Grammar instruction covers parts of speech, commas, participles, gerunds, and infinitives.
Unit 4 – Figurative Language: Nature Centered on figurative language, this unit uses nature-themed texts including Walden, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, and the myths of Persephone and Orpheus. Students identify and analyze similes, metaphors, and imagery, examine how figurative language shapes tone, apply these devices in descriptive writing, and master comma rules for series, coordinate adjectives, and introductory elements.
Unit 5 – Poetry Students delve into poetry analysis through works such as Fog, If, Ozymandias, Song of Myself, and a retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream. They study poetic forms, symbolism, rhyme and meter, tone, and imagery, compare poetic structures, compose an original poem, and write a narrative theme essay while practicing active and passive voice.
Unit 6 – Argument Analysis: Lost Cities Students analyze arguments in texts about lost civilizations, including readings on the Bermuda Triangle, Machu Picchu, Petra, and Howard Carter's discovery of King Tut's tomb. They evaluate claims, evidence quality, and source credibility, identify logical fallacies, rhetorical devices, and bias, and examine cultural perspectives and text structure in argumentation.
Unit 7 – Writing an Argument: Big City This unit builds argumentative writing skills through urban-themed texts such as His Girl Friday and The Importance of Being Earnest. Students craft claims, address counterarguments, and compose persuasive essays and letters, while studying verb moods, satire, multimedia comparisons, and the use of gerunds, participles, and infinitives in argumentative writing.
Unit 8 – Speech Analysis: Patriotism Focused on patriotic rhetoric, students analyze speeches by Booker T. Washington, John Adams, Daniel Webster, and Ronald Reagan. They evaluate rhetorical devices, claims, evidence, and purpose, distinguish connotations, and write and deliver a persuasive speech, while mastering commas in compound and complex sentences and correcting shifts in verb mood.
Unit 9 – Informative Writing: Careers Students learn informative writing through career-related texts on topics from Standard Oil to how Wi-Fi works. They write strong introductions, theses, body paragraphs, and conclusions, use domain-specific vocabulary and transitions, add formatting, revise for sentence variety and consistent style, and analyze a memoir.
Unit 10 – Research: Science and Technology Students develop research skills using science and technology texts, including NASA articles on Mars, The Life and Genius of Leonardo da Vinci, Occupy Mars, and Evacuation Plan. They plan research projects, evaluate media and reference sources, cite sources properly, write with technical terms, respond to science fiction, and punctuate dialogue correctly.
Unit 11 – Discussion and Presenting: Animals Students build speaking and listening skills through animal-themed texts. They prepare for and participate in discussions, plan and deliver an informative presentation with visuals, write objective summaries, develop point of view and precise details in narrative writing, and practice punctuation for nonrestrictive elements and direct address.
Unit 12 – Editing Conventions: Famous Authors The final unit refines the writing process and editing skills through the lens of famous authors. Students set purpose and audience, organize and draft, revise for voice, transitions, verb moods, and wordiness, and edit for modifiers, subject-verb agreement, pronoun case, and apostrophes
