Course Overview
The Introduction to Earth and Space Science course provides students with a comprehensive exploration of the dynamic systems that shape our planet and the universe beyond. Through a blend of lessons, hands-on labs, and demonstrations, students will investigate the interactions between Earth’s subsystems—geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere—as well as the celestial phenomena that define our place in the cosmos. Topics include the Earth-Moon-Sun system, planetary science, geological processes, weather and climate, and the human impacts on Earth’s systems. The course emphasizes scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and the application of evidence-based reasoning to understand natural processes and their implications.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a deep understanding of Earth’s geological history, the forces driving its physical and atmospheric changes, and the structure of the solar system and universe. They will learn to analyze data from maps, models, and experiments to explain phenomena like tides, seasons, plate tectonics, and climate change. Unit 2 – Solar System and Beyond This unit covers the structure and dynamics of the solar system, including the inner and outer planets, asteroids, comets, and the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud. Students will learn about the heliocentric model, the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram for star classification, and historical developments like the Space Race. Labs and activities, such as the Solar System Strip and Modeling Stars Brightness Lab, will help students compare planetary features and stellar properties. Unit 3 – Gravity and Planetary Dynamics Students will examine the role of gravity in shaping Earth and the solar system, focusing on its effects on tides, planetary weights, and orbital mechanics. Unit 4 – Earth’s Geological History This unit introduces geological time, relative dating, and the rock cycle, with lessons on the laws of superposition and major events in Earth’s history. Students will explore soil horizons, dinosaurs, and fossil evidence through activities like the Geologic Time Strip and The Great Fossil Find, gaining insight into how Earth’s history is reconstructed using scientific evidence. Unit 5 – Earth’s Systems Students will study Earth’s four subsystems—biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere—learning about their interactions and features like topography, convection currents, rocks, and minerals. Labs such as the Hot Water and Cold Water Convection Lab and Identifying Rock Lab will help students understand processes like heat transfer and rock formation, connecting these systems to Earth’s dynamic nature.
